What I'm Reading Now: The New York Times - I Buy, Therefore I Am (Unless I Return It)

Would you rather spend $1,000 on a brand new pair of Louboutins or a long weekend in Paris? The New York Times posted an article that presents the idea that your personality may impact your buying habits. San Francisco State University researchers found that people who spent money on food, travel and other experiences were more extroverted than those who spent money on materialistic things. The materialistic spenders were found to be less happy and also less liked than those who spent their money on experiences. So drop those shopping bags and pack up that suitcase!

  1. Reading this now - great find! I'm totally the kind of person who would rather have a tangible item than an experience (hence why "experiences" are allowed within my spending freeze :P)

  2. I agree and always try to remind myself of that fact when I see something I'm lusting after! I would much rather travel than have things. Besides, you can always shop while you're traveling. ;)

  3. That definitely makes you stop and think. I think we sometimes choose the material things because of instant gratification. But I agree that most of the time, experiences will actually make you happier! Have a good Monday :) xoxo, morgan

  4. I'd take the long weekend in Paris...don't even have to think about this one! Now don't get me wrong, I like things and I like to go shopping but a trip would always come before that in my book. Great post!!

  5. It's funny because I would initially say the shoes because I can enjoy them more than once but after reading that article, I'm reconsidering my answer! Life is all about making memories right?

  8. I would much rather go to pairs - but I would never spend that on a pair of shoes!
If I had to choose between a $50 pair of shoes and going out to dinner, I might choose the shoes.

  9. That's a good thing to keep in mind, I shall use that information to comfort myself when I do decide to spend money on food, travel and so forth and discourage myself from buying unnecessary items (which I do ALOT) Most interesting.
